How to rejuvenate wooden patio furniture

Woodie's DIY will show you how to rejuvenate your wooden patio furniture. This can become very tired and worn looking but it's easy to make it look as good as new.

How to do it

Step 1

If patio furniture is left exposed to the elements it can get very weathered looking very quickly. Before treating the wood, you must ensure it is clean and dry.

Step 2

Lightly sand the wood evenly and remove any loose wood fibres. Completely remove any varnish or paint already on the furniture prior to application. Make sure to wear a dust mask when sanding.

Step 3

Wipe down the furniture with a cloth soaked in white spirits after sanding.

Step 4

Before staining, if required, cover the area where you will be working with a dust sheet. There are many types of stains and oils that can be used on garden furniture so choose the finish you would like – in this case we are using a dark oak stain. Stir the paint well before applying. Use a good quality brush designed for water based finishes to apply the paint.

Step 5

Apply the paint in the direction of the grain. You may only need one coat if the paint dries with a consistent finish. If a second coat is needed, sand lightly with a fine grit sandpaper before applying the paint.
