Woodie's DIY will show you how to use a sander.

How to do it

When using a sander always remember to wear a dust mask and safety goggles.

Step 1

Step 1

USING A BELT SANDER

This is ideal for rapid removal of heavy material and is generally used at the beginning of your sanding process. This type of sander is also ideal for use on flooring and decking.

Step 2

Step 2

The motor powers these drums which rotate the sandpaper.

Step 3

Step 3

To attach the sandpaper make sure that the arrows on the paper are facing in the same direction as the arrows on the sander.

Step 4

Step 4

You then simply lift the catch at the side of the sander and slide the seamless loop of sandpaper over the two barrels. When the paper is fit over the barrels push the catch back into place.

Step 5

Step 5

When using a belt sander always sand the wood in the direction of the grain.

Step 6

Step 6

This sander has a dust bag for easy collection of dust. Others have dust extractors that can be easily attached to your vacuum.

Step 1

Step 1

USING A RANDOM ORBIT SANDER

It is similar to the Belt Sander in that it’s great for fast stock removal when sanding back surfaces.

Step 2

Step 2

The sanding disc is attached with a velcro backing.

Step 3

Step 3

The motor spins the sanding disc at high speed. This sander is useful for sanding on both concave and convex surfaces.

Step 1

Step 1

USING A SHEET SANDER

It is ideal for sanding smooth wood surfaces as it is less aggressive than a Belt Sander. You can buy specific sheets or cut standard sandpaper sheets to size and clip on the sanding sheet using the clamps on the sander. There are also models that use velcro backed sandsheets. This can save time when changing sheets.

Step 2

Step 2

The motor moves the sanding pad in a circular motion at high speed. Again when using this type of sander always sand the wood in the direction of the grain.

Step 3

Step 3

You can attach a vacuum to the dust extraction outlet

Step 1

Step 1

USING A MOUSE OR PALM SANDER

This is ideal for sanding corners and intricate areas.

Step 2

Step 2

The sandpaper sheet is mounted on the vibrating triangular head. The sandpaper has a velcro backing and simply attaches in place.

Step 3

Step 3

This type of sander allows you to get into those awkward areas that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to reach.

Step 4

Step 4

Again you can also attach a vacuum for dust extraction.
