Woodie's DIY will show you how to paint a wooden gate. This is a great way to brighten up the entrance to your garden or patio.

How to do it

Step 1

Step 1

Make sure wood is clean and dry.

Step 2

Step 2

Ideally remove the latch and bolt.

Step 3

Step 3

Sand the gate to remove any loose wood fibres and wipe off any dirt, dust and grease with white spirit. Previously stained or weathered wood should be sanded, then washed with white spirit and allowed to dry. Other finishes such as varnish or paint must be completely removed before application.

An Orbital or Mouse Sander is great for sanding larger areas and makes sanding much easier.

Step 4

Step 4

Mask over any hinges / fittings which can’t be removed.

Step 5

Step 5

For this smooth timber garden gate use an exterior wood stain. It will colour and protect while also allowing the wood to breathe.

Step 6

Step 6

For the best possible finish use a good quality brush designed for the application of water-based finishes. Place a dust sheet under the gate you are painting to protect the ground from any paint splatter. Stir the woodstain well before and during use. Apply even coats finishing in the direction of the wood grain.

Step 7

Step 7

Apply 3 coats allowing 4 hours between coats. Lightly sand before applying the final coat. Do not apply in direct sunlight.

Step 8

Step 8

When dry, if your hinges were rusty, use a brush to apply Trilfow Total Metal Paint to finish the job. It can even be applied directly to rust.

Step 9

Step 9

Finally re-attach your bolt to the gate, or fit a new one to match the freshly painted hinges.

Step 10

Step 10

Now your wooden gate is stained.
