Woodie's DIY will show you how to install draught excluders.

How to do it

Step 1

Step 1

INSTALLING A BRUSH STRIP TO A DOOR

To minimise draught at the base of a door apply a brush strip.

Step 2

Step 2

Measure the width of the door in a closed position.

Step 3

Step 3

A brush strip generally consists of two components. Each component must be cut separately. By applying gentle pressure the insert will slide out of its carrier.

Step 4

Step 4

Transfer the measurement of the door to the strip.

Step 5

Step 5

Cut the outer carrier with a hacksaw first, at your marked measurement.

Step 6

Step 6

Then line up your bristle insert with the outer casing and mark the new measurement

Step 7

Step 7

Cut the bristle insert with a side cutting pliers. This method of cutting the bristles ensures the individual bristles are held in their holders.

Step 8

Step 8

Then slightly bend the bristle insert. A slight bend in the bristle insert ensures the bristles will retain it in its carrier. Reassemble the brush strip.

Step 9

Step 9

Lightly screw to the door. Remember to leave sufficient slack to allow for final adjustment. Adjust strip vertically until bristle firmly strokes floor covering and tighten screws.

Step 10

Step 10

There are also self adhesive draught excluders available. These allow you to simply peel off the backing and place onto the door.

To minimise draughts around doors and windows you can buy self-adhesive seals to fit to door frames and window openings. When closed, these seals close the gaps between the opening and the frame. Different shaped seals suit different sized gaps, for instance this seal will suit a 1mm to 4mm gap, while this P-Shaped seal will suit a larger 3mm to 5.5mm gap.

Step 1

Step 1

INSTALLING A SURROUND SEAL TO A DOOR

Clean the surface of the door frame using a damp cloth.

Step 2

Step 2

Once it is dry, apply the seal to the door frame by removing the back from the self-adhesive foam strip and press it firmly on to the frame groove.

Step 3

Step 3

To form a neat joint at each corner, cut 45° angles with a scissors.

Step 4

Step 4

Work your way around the frame.

Step 1

Step 1

INSTALLING A SURROUND SEAL TO A WINDOW

Clean the surface of the window frame using a damp cloth.

Step 2

Step 2

Once it is dry, apply the seal to the door frame by removing the back from the self-adhesive foam strip and press it firmly on to the frame groove.

Step 3

Step 3

To form a neat joint at each corner, cut a 45° angle at each end of the lengths with a scissors.

Step 4

Step 4

Work your way around the frame.

Step 1

Step 1

INSTALLING A LETTERPLATE SEAL TO A FRONT DOOR

On the inside opening of your letterbox position the letter plate seal against your door.

Step 2

Step 2

Then simply screw fix the letterplate seal to the door.
