How to Deal with Condensation in a Bathroom

Woodie's DIY will show you how to deal with condensation in your bathroom. It's a very common problem and very easily fixed.

How to do it

Step 1

The bathroom and kitchen are two rooms that are subjected to higher levels of moisture and steam. If the ventilation in your room is poor, you may have problems resulting from condensation.

Step 2

This can be flaking paint or perhaps mould. If the problem is particularly bad and persists you may need to install a fan.

If problems occur in an upstairs bathroom, check to see that the attic above the bathroom is properly insulated to prevent the ceiling becoming too cold. If needed add extra insulation above the bathroom to help prevent the problem re-occurring.

Step 3

Before applying the paint, if there is an existing mouldy surface remove any mould and fungal growth and then paint the surface with an anti-damp paint.

Step 4

Also ensure all surfaces are clean, dry and free from dirt, grease and other contaminants. Remove any loose plaster or flaking paint material with a paint scraper. Fill any cracks and sand smooth prior to painting.

Step 5

Anti-Condensation paint is great for a bathroom. It provides an insulating coating that increases the temperature of the surface and reduces condensation. It protects against mould growth on the paint film and can be overcoated with the colour of your choice, if required.

Step 6

Lay down a dust sheet in the area you are working. Mask off any light fittings or tiles in the area you will be working. If necessary use a step ladder to reach the ceiling surface.
