Woodie's DIY will show you how to change a door handle. This can be done for aesthetic reasons or to replace a broken handle.

How to do it

Step 1

Step 1

Before taking off the handle, wedge the door in position to stop the door moving and avoid the door accidentally closing when the handle is off.

Step 2

Step 2

If you cannot see the screws in the handle there may be a plate covering the screws. Look for a slot on the side with a piece of metal sticking out and use a flat head screwdriver to push in the metal and the plate should then pop off. Some circular designed plates can also be screwed on, so check this.

Step 3

Step 3

Using a Philips head screwdriver or cordless screwdriver, remove the cover plate from the existing handle. This is done by removing the screws on the plate.

Step 4

Step 4

Slide both handles off.

Step 5

Step 5

Slide the new handle with the latch mechanism through the door handle hole making sure it lines up through the door latch. When the mechanism is lined up and showing out the other side of the door attach the other handle.

Check to see if the handle is working before securing with screws.

Step 6

Step 6

Screw new handle in place to the door.

Step 7

Step 7

Test the door again to make sure handle is working before closing the door.

Step 8

Step 8

When you are happy the handle is secured correctly fix any plates to the handle to finish off the job.
