How Plasterboard Fixings Work

Woodie's DIY will show you how Plasterboard Fixings work.

How to do it

Step 1

There are a variety of plasterboard fixings available that make it easy to fix a wide range of objects securely to a plasterboard wall. The type of fixing you choose will largely depend on what your job is, and the weight the fixing will need to hold.

Step 2

A nylon plasterboard fixing is suitable for light weight around the house objects. To secure this fixing, drill a hole using the matching sized steel drill bit as indicated on the packet. Place the fixing into the hole, and screw in your screw.

Step 3

The screw compacts the fixing making it secure in the wall.

Use a steel or wood drill bit to drill into the soft plasterboard surface and don’t use hammer action as this may damage the paper backing on the plasterboard, which will subsequently affect the fixings grip.

Step 4

An arrow head plasterboard fixing is suitable for light to medium weight objects that need to be secured to a plasterboard wall. To secure this fixing, drill a hole using the matching sized steel drill bit as indicated on the packet.

Step 5

Slide the fixing into the hole, and as you tighten the screw, the arrow head expands and clamps to the back of the plasterboard.

Step 6

An interset fixing can be used to secure heavier objects to a plasterboard wall. It can be purchased with a clamping gun. To secure this fixing, drill a hole using the matching sized steel drill bit as indicated on the packet. Place the fixing in the hole and then clamp with the gun to lock the fixing in place. Finish by tightening the screw.

Step 7

A spring toggle fixing can be used on all plasterboard walls and is suitable for securing heavier items. To secure this fixing, drill a hole using the matching sized steel drill bit as indicated on the packet. Slide the fixing through the hole and when it clears the plasterboard it will spring open and the plate will provide a clamp against the back of the plasterboard. Drive in the screw to fully secure the fixing.

Step 8

A self-drive plasterboard fixing can be used for lightweight fixings and is very easy to use.

Step 9

Remove the screw from the fixing and then screw the fixing itself directly into the plasterboard using either a cordless or hand held screwdriver. Drive the screw into the fixing.
